The Original tour in English pioneered by Berlin Walks!

Hitler in Berlin 1936

Just outside Berlin, over 50,000 innocent victims of the Nazis perished in Sachsenhausen in conditions of appalling brutality. The camp became a training ground for the execution of the Holocaust and ultimately the center of the whole concentration camp system. After the Nazis were defeated, the Soviets turned the camp into a gulag for their own political enemies. Thousands more were to perish over the next five years.

This tour was researched by historian Gabriel Fawcett who is publishing in English the most important witness account of the camp and regularly guides for Berlin Walks. All our tour guides have their own special insights into the history of Sachsenhausen and are experienced in unraveling the complex history of the Holocaust. We believe this history is relevant to all people today and that a visit to such a memorial should not be missed by anyone (if you take yourself there, avoid Mondays when all exhibits are closed).

On the tour, we explain:

  • why Sachsenhausen was created and why the Nazis built the concentration camp system
  • how conditions worsened inside the camp, especially after the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939
  • the "death march" and liberation of the camp
  • the history of the Soviet Camp

Inside the camp, we include:

  • the "Appellplatz" - parade ground
  • the Jewish Barrack
  • punishment cells
  • execution grounds and crematorium "Station Z"
  • Pathology Laboratory and camp hospital
