Six Great Coffee Roasters in Berlin

One of the best parts of being on holiday is splurging on great gastronomical experiences. The coffee in your average German cafe might not be so different to what you’re used to at home, but Berlin has several great coffee roasters that put that extra effort into creating the perfect cup and making sure their suppliers are treated fairly along the way. This is by no means an exhaustive list, I’ve put together a list of six great Berlin coffee roasters for you below including my favourite, Populus.

Luckily for you, third wave of coffee is alive and well in Berlin! From personal experience over the past 10 years, I know that some guests (mostly Australians!) are disappointed with coffee in Berlin (and all of Europe. Sorry, Australia). Well, that story is changing! New roasteries are opening up all over town every year. You can get your hands on both single-origin and blends that you can enjoy right away or pack up and take home as gifts.

19grams Berlin

Bringing specialty coffee to Berlin for almost 20 years, 19grams offers a one-stop shop for brewing equipment, barista courses, and to put it in their own words “bloody good coffee”.

For a real treat check out one of their geisha coffees at one of their four cafés in Berlin. Visit their website here.

The Barn

For many people in Berlin “The Barn” is the high-quality specialty coffee shop. Over the last few years, they’ve managed to open up 10 cafes in town, as well as set up a tempting and tasty subscription service to get the best bean delivered to your door. You’ll find the roastery at their location in Voltastrasse.

Bonanza Coffee Roasters, Berlin

You can find Bonanza cafés in Kreuzberg, Mitte, and my favourite: Oderbergerstr. In Prenzlauer Berg. Oderbergerstrasse is right by Mauerpark, so you can combine your Sunday caffeine fix with a trip to the world-famous flea market. Bonanza even supply a couple of Michelin-starred restaurants!

Cebe Coffee

One of Berlin’s newest roasteries, Cebe opened up in a brand new building in the district of Friedrichshain in 2020. They have a modern, unique, interior with contrasting dark furnishings and huge windows. Cebe are already putting their mark on this coffee-loving city with their slick, professional look and tasty coffee.

Impala

Impala’s cafés are just heaven. Excellent sandwiches with great German bread (I’m British, sandwiches are important, ok?), lovely interior and graphic design, and of course, perfectly roasted specialty coffee to die for. You can find Impala’s wonderful coffee in four cafés across town.

Populus Coffee

My personal favourite. This is where I pick up my beans! Populus is both sleek and charming and has a wonderful location in the shade of the trees by the canal in trendy “Kreuzkölln”. Populus Coffee pride themselves on fair and transparent sourcing and production, delivering a top-notch product. Also, on top of their coffee, they do a lemon & early grey tart that is just the best thing.

Populus Coffee is right next to Berlin’s outdoor Turkish Market, held every Tuesday and Friday.
