Why a private visit

Who the private Sachsenhausen tour is for

The former Sachsenhausen concentration camp is a place for questions, discussion and quiet reflection. On a private tour the whole day belongs to your group, so your guide can respond to what you want to understand and give you time where you need it.

  1. Families

Your guide can judge what is appropriate for younger or less experienced visitors and adapt the level of detail and pace, with room for breaks and difficult questions.

  2. Schools and universities

Tell us about your curriculum or course topic. Your guide can focus on themes such as the camp system, forced labour, prisoner groups or the Soviet Special Camp, and leave time for discussion.

  3. Companies and organisations

A meaningful, well-organised visit for teams, delegations or conference groups, with a starting time that fits your programme.

  4. Personal and family history

Visiting because of a family connection or a research interest? Let us know when booking so your guide can prepare and give that part of the history more time.

How the day works

Your private day trip from Berlin, step by step

Plan for roughly six hours door to door, including a train ride of around one hour each way between central Berlin and Oranienburg. If part of the memorial is temporarily closed, your guide adjusts the route on the day.

  1. Meet your guide in central Berlin

Your guide meets your group at the agreed time, at a central meeting point or, on request, at your centrally located hotel.

  2. Travel to Oranienburg

The regional train to Oranienburg takes around an hour, followed by a walk of around 20–25 minutes from the station to the memorial. Your guide uses the journey to introduce the history of the concentration camp and to find out what your group already knows and most wants to understand.

  3. Explore the memorial

From Tower A, your guide leads you through the former camp, including Station Z, the camp prison and the infirmary barracks. Because the group is yours alone, the route and the time spent at each place follow your group's interests.

  4. Questions, reflection and return

With no other visitors in your group, there is space to stop, discuss and ask questions along the way, before you travel back to Berlin together.

  • Prisoner groups & persecution
  • Forced labour
  • Resistance & survival
  • The SS camp system
  • Soviet Special Camp after 1945

A note on tone: this is a visit to a place of mass suffering and death, and your guide treats it that way. Some buildings were destroyed or rebuilt, so parts of the history are explained at empty sites or reconstructions.

FAQ

Private Sachsenhausen Tour FAQ

Practical answers about booking Sachsenhausen privately: price, travel time from Berlin, hotel pickup, starting times, children and school groups, and languages.

Is the price per person or per group?

Per group, depending on its size: €429 for 1–10 guests, €459 for 11–20 and €474 for 21–30, always with one licensed guide. Train tickets are not included. Any other extras are shown during booking or confirmed with you separately.

How long does it take to get from Berlin to Sachsenhausen?

Your group and guide take the regional train together from central Berlin to Oranienburg, a ride of around one hour, then walk around 20–25 minutes from the station to the memorial. Train tickets are not part of the tour price: each person needs a Berlin ABC day ticket. Prefer to travel by car? Take a look at our private tours by car.

How long is the private Sachsenhausen tour?

Around six hours in total, including the journey from central Berlin to the memorial and back. The time at the memorial itself can be adapted to your group.

Can the guide pick us up from our hotel?

Pickup from a centrally located Berlin hotel can usually be arranged. Add your accommodation details when booking and we will confirm the best starting point for the journey to Oranienburg.

Can we choose our starting time?

Yes, subject to guide availability and the memorial's opening hours. Because the visit takes around six hours, a morning start works best for most groups.

Who will guide our private group?

One of our Sachsenhausen specialists. Every guide we send to the memorial holds a guiding licence from the memorial itself and keeps their knowledge up to date through the memorial foundation's training programme.

Is a private tour suitable for children and school groups?

Often it is the best way for young people to visit. Some of what happened at Sachsenhausen is hard to hear, and with only your own group present, the guide can choose what to explain and how, and slow down when needed. Please tell us the age of the youngest participants when you book.

Can the tour focus on a particular topic?

Yes. Your guide can give more time to themes such as particular prisoner groups, forced labour, the SS administration or the Soviet Special Camp after 1945. Mention your interests when booking, or send us a custom tour request for a combined itinerary.

Which languages are private tours available in?

Our standard private tours are in English. Dutch or Spanish may sometimes be possible, depending on guide availability. Please contact us before booking if you need a non-English tour.

What should we bring?

Bring food and water, as there are few places to buy refreshments during the visit. Wear comfortable shoes and clothing for the weather, because much of the visit is outdoors.

What is the €3 memorial fee?

Every private tour price includes €3 per participant for the Sachsenhausen Memorial. The fee helps maintain the memorial site and supports its research, so your visit also contributes to keeping this history documented and accessible.
